How Was Impotence Treated Before Viagra

It is an undeniable fact that Viagra, Cialis and Levitra are the best remedies to treat erectile dysfunction nowadays. But how it was before Viagra? I don't mean such rather modern ways of cure as vacuums, squirting, surgery or injections are. I mean those times when medicine wasn't so advanced and people didn't know all those tricks to cheat the disease. There were a lot of very unusual and rather inhumane ways to treat impotence, which usually were useless. Let's have a look at some of them!
The hammer of witches, the spinal marrow of deer and thirty sparrows
Do you know that in ancient time (in 1486 to be precise) in special writing under name "The Hammer of Witches" the vixen tricks and necromantic exorcisms were considered as the main reasons of male impotence? And it was the only one way out to lift the curse - by killing the witch had sent the disease. Wasn't it a brutal solution of the problem! A less radical solution was suggested in another anti-witches' work making in fifteenth century. Its author said that it would be enough to kill a dog and sprinkle a little of its blood all around inside the adobe where the sick man lived. There was a yet another very interesting custom in Russian mythology to overcome the impotence: to catch a deer, pull the spinal marrow from its backbone, dilute it with water and take regularly this miracle cure. Or you may just catch thirty sparrows, stew them for a while and have for a dinner, for example. These two recipes were supposed to be the sure impotence remedies in Russia.
Is this your idea of a joke? Well, let's move to the age of Enlightenment. A famous American physician of nineteenth century claimed that masturbation and early conversations were the main causes of erectile dysfunction. Some so-called specialists even suggested tying up the hands of sleeping children and adolescents to prevent them from taking their genitals. So why should we wonder nowadays while getting information about special beer, spiders and other strange remedies for impotence?
